Solar Snow Storm Twisted magnetic fields around sunspot region 9906 unleashed a powerful X1 flare on the 21st April at 01:51UT (right picture). It also produced a Coronal Mass Ejection and an S3 radiation Storm. The high energy particles produced by the flare can be seen starting to affect the detectors on CDS (left picture) as it was rastering across another part of the Sun. The raster commenced at 01:28UT (at right side of image) and the events, seen as speckles, start arriving at the peak of the flare (01:51UT) Note that SOHO/CDS is some 91 million miles from the Sun. As the intensity of the proton storm continued to increase CDS was commanded to a safe mode to avoid damage to its detectors.
