Writhing eruption A huge writhing eruption on April 7, 2002 at the Sun's south-east limb was detected by CDS The left-hand frame shows the raw image of the event, as observed at 14:42 UT. The image is 200,000 km x 200,000 km and the south-east limb can be seen to the top-right of the frame - about 100 Earths would fit inside the frame. The right-hand frame shows a velocity map of the same event, which is almost entirely blue-shifted, i.e. the material is directed towards us and it is estimated to be traveling at over 200 km/s. These observations were made using the emission line of Oxygen V at 250,000 Kelvin.
