Solar Vital Statistics: How far away is the Sun?

How far to the Sun?

The Sun is about 150 million kilometres from the Earth.

Light, travelling at 300,000 kilometres per second, takes 8 minutes 20 seconds to reach the Earth from the Sun.

Yes they do! The problem is the Earth revolves around the Sun in an elliptical orbit so the distance is constantly changing. The Earth is closest to the Sun on January 4th when its distance is 147 million kilometres, and furthest from the Sun on July 4th when its distance is 152 million kilometres. So, about 150,000,000 means somewhere between 147 and 152 million.
