EISCAT stands for European Incoherent SCATter radar and the project is funded by Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the UK. (Before you say something, Japan is not a European country but we had already got the name "EISCAT" before they joined in!)

Part of the reason that I work for it is that a Welshman (called Granville Beynon) put the project together. Remember that I'm working at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth.

The three radar dishes that make up EISCAT are at Tromsø, Kiruna and Sodankylä. You can see precisely where they are on the map below.
