Stellar solar connection

Hello, my name is Darko...... have you have ever walked around some place on really dark, clear nights (preferably a quiet and warm beach!)? Were you impressed when you saw many, many stars? If you were able to spend more time there and your eyes became dark-adapted, you may have noticed the Milky Way - our own galaxy which looks like a faint cloud spreading over the sky.

We now know that that faint cloud is made up of billions of faint stars. You may have asked yourself 'What are those stars?' and you may have wondered if mankind might one day reach them. I shall try to answer some of the questions which I think you might be wondering about.

First though, do you remember that well-used quiz question?

Yes, of course, it's the SUN!

Many of the stars that make up the Milky Way are very similar to our Sun. In other words, our Sun, although very special to us, is actually a pretty ordinary star. It might of course be unique in having a planet with life orbiting it - but that remains to be proved.
