As a child at school in the remote Swedish town of Norrköping, Alfvén was a member of the school's radio club. There were no nearby radio stations, and Alfvén was thrilled when, on tuning the receiver that he had built, he heard faint notes of music coming from a station in Aberdeen! The waves in the solar atmosphere were named after Alfvén, because he was the person who propsed that they might exist. In fact he was awarded the Nobel prize for Physics in 1970, one of the best prizes a scientist can win. |
