On June 25th, 1998, contact was lost with the SOHO spacecraft whilst it was manoeuvering in space.

No-one loses a billion dollar spacecraft and then says "Oh well, that's that, it's a million miles away and there's nothing we can do about it" and the SOHO team was no exception.

I (me, Jack Ireland, that is) was lucky enough to be at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center- the place where we control SOHO - when the Million Mile Rescue was going on. I asked them how they had done it....
