How many eclipses are there in a year?

Well although the SunBlock pages mostly talk about solar eclipses (and there are total, annular and partial solar eclipses), don't forget there are also lunar eclipses. They are caused by the moon being covered by the Earth's shadow, rather than the other way around.

The most that is possible is 7 - either 5 solar and 2 lunar or 4 solar and 3 lunar

The fewest number it is possible to have is 2 - and in that case they must both be solar eclipses.

Remember, those rules don't tell us about whether any of the solar eclipses will be total. They are much rarer than partial eclipses, and it's a good approximation to say there will be about one per year.

Yep, it'll have precisely ZERO - which is approximately one!

The longest possible eclipse lasts 7 min 31 secs.
