Lockyer was fascinated by total eclipses and between 1870 and 1905 he led eight expeditions to observe them.
In particular, Lockyer was amazed by the bright red prominences that sometimes can be observed during total eclipses. This inspired him to discover a technique of observing them without the aid of an eclipse. |
