Stellar Research

Although Lockyer was best known for his work on the Sun, he also extended his studies to the brighter stars in the sky. By determining their spectral type he was able to classify them and arranged them in order of rising and falling temperatures.

This work formed a major part of the observational base upon which the theory of stellar evolution (the evolution of stars) was developed after his death in the 1920s.
